Passing Variables - Basic Subids

Pass variables through your Linkshiftr links and on to your destination urls to record dynamic information such as keywords, placements, and network details.

Passing variables is an important way for online marketers to track the performance of their marketing campaigns. Through the tracking of variables we can find out which ads are converting best, which sites are pulling in the most users, or which keywords are costing you lots of money but aren’t generating any sales.

While there are many different options for passing dynamic and static variables through your linkshiftr links the easiest is simply to just use "subid".

To add a subid to your linkshiftr link all you need to do is add ?subid=NAME to the end of your link where name is whatever you want to track. Here is an example:

Then within the linkshiftr interface when editing your link you insert {subid} into your destination url wherever you would like NAME to go. Here is an example of a destination url:

In this way whatever a marketer uses in place of NAME will get inserted into the destination site url like this:

NAME can be any tracking information you would like such as a campaign ID, ad ID, affiliate ID or keyword. Commonly marketers need to track keyword variables from search engines such as Google or Yahoo. In order to do this Google and Yahoo ask you to place {keyword} somewhere within your url and they will dynamically insert their keywords users searched for into that spot as clicks occur. Here is an example of how this works on google assuming the keyword the user was searching for was "education".
